Seven Scouts from our local Kennet District have recently completed their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Expedition challenge. The group, including explorer scouts and Network members spent 4 days and 3 nights walking and hiking over 100km across Dartmoor. This expedition challenge is one of the requirements for the Gold Duke of Edinburgh award and other challenges which the young people must complete include 12 months of volunteering, 12 months undertaking and learning a new skill, 6 months participating in a physical activity plus participating in a residential experience lasting 5 days. The 7 young people undertook a wide range of activities to fulfil these criteria including volunteering with local Scout groups around Newbury, and within the National Citizen Service (NCS) while participating in a number of sports including Rugby 7s, Archery and Aerial hoop. A wide range of skills included being a member of the Corelli String orchestra, learning musical instruments and also maritime navigation while a member of the Southampton University Royal Navy Unit. Residential experiences have also been varied from working at Blackpool Zoo, to assisting on a St Nicolas School year 6 trip to Lakeside and joining in a NCS residential experience. While some of the young people are mid-way through their award, others are almost finished and the next step for the team is to make a presentation on their expedition aim which is to investigate the social, economic and environment impacts of geocaching on Dartmoor. Following their Gold Duke of Edinburgh award, the 7 Scouts will also complete their Queen’s Scout award, the ultimate award for Scouts.
